Call Us for a Ride!
Herkimer County NY is a surprisingly beautiful place. Even approaching it from the New York State Thruway, an otherwise bland highway, you will marvel as you pass through mountains and see towns nestled in the corresponding valleys.
Herkimer County has its tourist destinations, and some of them are pretty unique. One example is the Herkimer Diamond Mine, where visitors can chisel away at crystals embedded in the county's dolomite outcrops to discover "treasure."
Why not come and see for yourself--not just the "Herkimer diamonds" but all the other surprises that await you there? First, though, a bit of background...
Herkimer County, NY is a long, thin county extending from just south of the New York State Thruway at its southern end to the heart of the Adirondack Mountains at its northern end. The county is largely rural.
There are relatively few municipalities in Herkimer County. Most lie at the southern end and border the Thruway (e.g., Little Falls, Dolgeville, Mohawk, and Herkimer).
City: Little Falls (pop. 4,716)

The Village (actually a hamlet) of Old Forge in The Adirondacks has several attractions, including:
There is no public transportation in Herkimer County.
Birnie Bus Service serves various locations throughout Central New York, between Utica and Syracuse.
There also are bus terminals serving Little Falls, Mohawk, and Herkimer for the Greyhound and Trailways lines. Some parts of the county might find the Utica bus terminal the most useful.
Taxi service is available in larger Herkimer County communities, though most is based in nearby cities (such as Utica, Rome, Oneonta, and Syracuse).
You will see that Herkimer County has access to several train lines within a very short distance.
Train stations in Mohawk and Herkimer are served by Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited Service. These are very small stations, however, so train travelers might find it more convenient to go by way of stations in Albany or Utica.
The Albany-Rensselaer Train Station serves the following train lines:
The Utica and Syracuse train stations also serve the east-west lines listed for Albany-Rensselaer (Empire, Lakeshore Limited, and Maple Leaf).
Head to Amtrak's Routes and Destinations page for a more detailed look at these routes.
By far, the closest and most convenient airport near Herkimer County is Albany Airport, about 80 miles away. Albany Airport serves many North American cities and has other international connections via JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.
A close second choice would be Syracuse’s Hancock Airport, which is about 85 miles from Herkimer County. It is served by fewer airlines and has fewer flights than Albany.
It's pushing it a bit to say that Herkimer is close to NYC, other than noting the fact that it's possible to take the Thruway (I-90 and I-89) all the way. The drive could take several hours with the city traffic.
We'd suggest connecting from Albany Airport instead if this is feasible.
Other large airports ( e.g., Boston Logan or Montréal Trudeau) would take at least half a day to reach from Herkimer County. We consider the Albany Airport connection or an airport taxi to an NYC airport the best options.
Herkimer County NY, like the rest of Central New York, might seem very rural and isolated. However, as we've shown, there are plenty of fun and interesting things to see and do there.
Besides, The New York State Thruway (I-90) provides pretty direct access to New York City as well as Upstate New York's larger cities: Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo.
Except for Utica, each of these upstate cities has its own mid-sized airport. They also have theatre, art, music, historical sites, and dining establishments of various kinds. You will find some of these things in Herkimer County as well.
Wherever you call home, we look forward to seeing you in Herkimer County and Central New York sometime soon. We'd like to show you around, so let us know when you'll be here!
